Tonex is the last-born child in a family of six. His mother died when he was just ten months old. The husband, who is mentally ill, was responsible for her death, leaving Tonex with no parent to take care of him. The grandmother took full responsibility for the children, and she relies on doing piecework to bring food to the table. She struggles to find food or clothes for the children, and sometimes, they go to bed without eating.

Tonex and his family belong to the Baptist church. Tonex is a well-behaved, quiet child, and gets along with the other kids at school. He likes playing football with friends, and his favorite dish is Nsima with beans.
