Kondwani is the firstborn in a family of five kids who live with their single mother. Following the death of his father after a long illness in 2018, Kondwani’s mother started a business of buying and selling tomatoes. The business wasn’t bringing a lot of income, but it kept the family going. However, things got worse when Cyclone Freddy hit in early 2022, and his mum lost her business. Since then, she has been failing to provide basic needs for Kondwani and his four siblings. Despite being selected to a good community secondary school, there is no one to pay for his tuition, putting him at risk of dropping out early on.

Kondwani, who dreams of becoming a doctor, spends his free time studying or doing group work with friends from school. Sometimes, he repairs electronic gadgets like small phones with a keypad or small radio players. His mother commends his good behavior and readiness to always help with house chores or work in the maize field.
