This family of 4 lost their mother 2 years ago. She died after a long battle with cancer, and after she passed, the dad abandoned the family, never to be heard from again. This left Joyce, age 14 at the time, as the guardian and sole provider of the three younger siblings, the youngest of whom was 5. They had a grandmother, but she was old and frail, unable to take care of the kids, and she passed away last year. When the grandmother died, a well-wisher from the community brought the family to the attention of the Passion Center staff.
Now that the family is part of our Child Headed Household program, they receive help with food and hygiene items every month, have their school fees paid, and are receiving encouragement and counseling from our staff. But during a recent visit, our staff realized that the house they are living in is on the verge of collapse. A portion of the grass-thatched roof has blown away, and the brick walls of the house are cracked and will probably not withstand the coming rainy season. They also are using a grass shelter for a toilet, leaving them exposed to the public, and exposed to all kinds of disease and illness.
Our prayer and our hope are to raise funds to build a new home for this young family. The money raised will build them a sturdy brick and cement house, plus a sturdy brick and cement toilet and bath shelter. It also will provide for all 4 kids to have a mattress for the first time in their lives, plus cooking pots, and even solar lights inside their house, giving them an extra layer of security and protection.
