The Poultry & Backyard Gardening project seeks to further lift up 210 of the most vulnerable that we serve: The Infant Rescue guardians, orphans living with HIV/AIDS, Champs families (special needs children and their families), orphans in Child Headed Households, and young Passion orphans living with elderly grandparents or relatives. This simple but unique project seeks to provide long-term food security and economic empowerment to hundreds of households!

Here's How it Works:

Under the training, discipleship, and farming principles of the Elisha Initiative ministry, the first 70 households will receive seeds to cultivate an 18’x18’ garden and 11 chickens which will be used to both improve their nutrition and earn money for their households by selling their excess produce and eggs. These first 70 households will then be trained to raise more chickens from their start-up, with a modest first-year goal of raising 50 chickens. From those 50, the first 70 households will provide the next 70 households with their start-up of 11 chickens!

Poultry & Backyard Gardening Update- FULLY FUNDED!

Published Tue, Mar 23, 21. Written by Passion Center for Children.

Our Poultry & Backyard Gardening Project is FULLY FUNDED!

Because of your generosity, we raised enough support to begin providing the start-up resources, training, and discipleship for the first 70 households identified in this project.

This week we kicked off the project with training! The training was held at the Mulunguzi and Jali centers. It was in 2 parts: The first portion covered business skills and various aspects of vegetable gardening, including land preparation and choosing seeds based on the soil type. This was facilitated by Maxwell Chinangwa, who is the Project Coordinator. The second portion covered chicken housing, feeding, breeding and parasites, and disease control. This was facilitated by Mr. Mkwezalamba, an official from the district Agriculture department.

Through the training, the participants were equipped with the much-needed knowledge and skills for productive poultry farming and vegetable gardening. They were also encouraged to take the training seriously so that they can fully benefit from the project. For the next 2 weeks, the beneficiaries will be constructing chicken houses and preparing land for the backyard gardens. Start-up chickens and vegetable seeds will be distributed in the second and third week of April!

Campaign Update- 48% Funded!

What a sweet response we're getting so far on the Poultry/Gardening Project! In just about a week's time we have received donations for over 20 starter kits. We'll match those individuals with the first 70 Passion Center infants, Child Headed Households, Champions, and Passion students that we've identified. What an encouraging start! Thank you to everyone who has given towards this already!
